The Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation (HIFiRE) program was jointly established by the Australian Government Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and the US Air Force Research Laboratory to investigate hypersonics technology and its potential for next-generation aeronautical systems. With international collaboration and funding from the Queensland Government, Boeing and DSTO, The University of Queensland was able to build advanced scramjet prototypes and undertake prolonged flight tests at speeds of more than Mach 8 as part of the HIFiRe program.
Sustainable energy

The six-star, green star Sir Samuel Griffith Centre at Griffith University’s Nathan campus in Brisbane’s south is Australia’s first teaching and research facility powered by solar and hydrogen storage technologies.
Griffith University has also established the National Hydrogen Materials Reference Facility, a state-of-the-art reference laboratory that focuses on hydrogen storage materials and hydrogen embrittlement, with commercial, government and research institute alliances to develop world-class technology in this industry.
Advanced agriculture
Plant your ambitions in Queensland and you can harvest a growing career anywhere in the world. With industry and government backing, QUT is at the forefront of research to develop profitable processes for turning livestock industry waste into viable and valuable bioenergy and bioproducts. The $14 million national project is managed by Meat & Livestock Australia with funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources.
The research project to develop technologies for processing beef, dairy and pork wastes into animal feed, fertilisers, fuels, chemicals and other materials will lead to increased profitability and sustainability for advanced agriculture industry partners and create jobs in regional Australia.
Biomedicine

One of many research facilities located in Brisbane, The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute (UQDI) studies cancer, immunology and genomic medicine. Commercial collaborations with the institute’s researchers and students have resulted in the discovery, development and release of the world’s first cervical cancer vaccine as well as the development of a new test to identify patients with the potential to develop diabetes.
